Landscape lighting is a design problem before it is a shopping problem
Where roofline lighting handles the house, landscape lighting takes care of the yard: the walk, the beds, the trees, the steps. Done well, you notice the yard and not the fixtures. Done badly, you get a line of glowing dots along the path and not much else.
The pieces of a plan
Most plans start with the walk, because that is the part you use whether or not anybody is looking. A well placed uplight keeps the yard from going flat and black at nine at night. Beds, stairs, retaining walls and the drive fill in the rest, and the step lighting is safety more than looks.
Landscape, patio and security lighting are related jobs
The request almost never stays in one lane. Out back, patio lighting is the difference between a patio you use and one you look at. Security lighting covers the dark corners, the side yard, the area behind the garage. Accent lighting is the finish work.
Where landscape lighting usually goes wrong
More light is not better. A yard lit evenly at every point looks flat, which is exactly the look people are trying to get away from. The second mistake is aiming fixtures where people walk, so every guest gets a light in the eye on the way to the door. The third is forgetting that plants grow, since the bed in front of a fixture fills in.
Commercial grounds lighting
On commercial property the goals shift. Outdoor seating lives or dies on the lighting. Parking and walkways are a footing and visibility question. A neighborhood entrance is about the first impression of the whole community, which is why entry lighting gets attention in planned developments.
