But it is worth asking what the channel is, how it mounts and how it is wired, because the answer tells you how carefully somebody works. The people who can walk you through it are usually the ones who install it carefully.
What the channel does
Each diode lives in a channel, not clipped to a gutter. That channel hides the hardware and aims the output. It gets painted to your trim color before it goes up, which is why a good install is invisible at noon and obvious at nine.
Individual diodes, not a strip
Each LED in the run is addressed on its own. Without individual control you get one color across every foot of the run. With it patterns become possible. Most nights nobody uses any of that, which is not a criticism.Look at somebody's finished work at noon rather than at nine, because night hides sloppy mounting and daylight does not.
Power, control and the parts you do not see
The parts you never look at are where the wire runs, how it is powered and what talks to your phone. Wire routing is where careful work shows, since sloppy runs are obvious once you know to look. It is a fair question and any installer should answer it without hedging.
What it means for maintenance
Permanent means permanent, which is the appeal and also the responsibility. Careful work stays clean. A rushed one announces itself in daylight, which is exactly what you were paying to avoid. The hardware is the easier half. The install is the rest.
Weather is what the hardware is up against
Nothing about a permanent system is easy on the equipment. Summer heat builds up along a sunlit fascia, and heat is the enemy of anything with a circuit in it. Humidity and the storms that come with it are the other half, which is why connections and seals matter. Which is why the quality argument is about the joints and the housing, not the light itself.
The control nobody mentions
The output is not one level. Full brightness is for December, and it is far more light than an ordinary evening wants. Most people settle at a fraction of full output, since restraint is what makes it look considered.
